Managers are often comfortable with the way we’ve been doing things for a long time
“We’ve always done it that way” is often the response when people – staff members – suggest another way of doing things.
Of course, if we always do things the way we did things, we have no Internet, we have only have medical treatment that existed 50 years ago, the aviation industry would hardly ‘get off the ground’.
And productivity would be static.
Often team members are reluctant to propose a new idea, to suggest another way of doing something Concerned that their manager will resist the suggestion. So they stay quiet.
Leaders challenge all members of the team to look for better ways.
In The Leadership Challenge, this is the third practice of exemplary leadership: Challenge the Process.
And challenging the process individuals are encouraged to try new ways, mistakes are allowed because they are learning opportunities.
