Black wheat was developed by the National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI). Under a breeding project, Kala wheat plants have been developed by crossbreeding a wheat variety (EC866732) obtained from Japan with a high yielding and disease resistant wheat variety PBW621.
The other two varieties of black wheat are purple and blue wheat. Due to excess of Agropyron chromosome, its color becomes blue. But colored wheat is found rich in anthocyanin which is a type of antioxidant. Therefore, many health benefits of art wheat can be seen which we will discuss in detail further.
